Year 5 Environmental Outdoor Activities:

This week, many of the year 5 pupils took part in a range of activities.  In Maths, we had a scavenger hunt for clues to find numbers.  We then had to work out sums to find the solutions – some of the clues were really hard to find.  We produced an art pallet using different media after exploring leaves and trees.  Following this, we had our own leaf slide show exploring the many beautiful colours in our natural environment.  In English, we debated the pros and cons of ‘Cycle lanes versus trees!’.  We finished the two days with digital photography and editing to produce autumnal finished photo slides.   At Coundon, we really appreciate our school grounds and Forest School.

Year 5 Bushcraft Residential

Year 5 had an unforgettable Bushcraft trip, filled with adventure and teamwork! The children learned essential outdoor skills such as trap making, shelter building and basic first aid. They even participated in a mock plane wreckage recovery, adding to the excitement. They mastered fire lighting and enjoyed cooking some of their own meals. The evenings were spent camping with friends and indulging in the classic campfire treat—s’mores! It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to embrace the great outdoors.

Local History Week – Blitz Day in Year 5

Today we dressed up in 1940s or WW2 attire. We had great fun creating artwork which was influenced by the past (the Coventry Blitz) and the work of Sandra Lawrence. As well as this created poetry inspired by the Blitz and imaged what life would have been like for an evacuated child.

Year 5 Local History Visit to Coventry City Centre

Year 5 learnt about the key events in the Coventry Blitz on November 14th 1940.  They experienced the Blitz at the Transport Museum, visited the Herbert Art Gallery to sit in an Anderson Shelter and reflected on the impact of the Blitz in the old Coventry Cathedral.  The children explored the wealth of history in our local town centre and how events from the past will have impacted on the city and its people.

Year 5 Cultures Week – Poland

Paper Craft

Wycinanki – intricate paper cut-outs – have been a popular folk craft in Poland since the 1900s. The decorative designs are mainly associated with two regions, Łowicz and Kurpie. The Kurpie cut-outs are made with a single sheet of paper and are thus totally symmetrical and only one colour.

Polish

The first known Polish pisanki date back to the 10th century. The pre-Christian tradition of dying eggs (originally red, the colour of blood) was to symbolize rebirth and renewal. Then, young women would decorate eggs and give them to young men.

Polish Dancing

We also learnt some Polish dance moves while dancing to the Polish traditional folk dance: Krakowiak.

Polish Food Tasting

During cultures week, we also tried some Polish food. This included:

  • Krokiety kasztelanskie (Croquettes with mushrooms and mozzarella cheese)
  • Pierogi with strawberries (fruit dumplings)
  • Polish bread
  • Kopernik Pierniki (polish gingerbread)
  • Slomka Ptysiowa (choux pastry product with sugar)

The children enjoyed this and especially enjoyed the gingerbread and the choux pastry.

Year 5 Art

During our Mayan’s and Mexico topic, Year 5 have been busy creating these incredible Day of the Dead masks. The children completed research into existing mask designs and the Mexican festival. They then created papier mache masks and decorated them using paint and tissue paper flowers.

Year 5 Eid Assembly

Year 5 shared their special assembly with parents about Eid.  Well done Year 5 for sharing your information, artwork and even a special prayer as part of the assembly (written by the children themselves).
