This week we will be focusing on Christmas and will be spending some time practising for our Christmas Nativity play. The children have all been given a part in the play and will all dress up in a costume to take part. We have all of the costumes in school so please do not worry about buying or making anything. All we ask is that you help your child to learn any lines that we send home. The children will perform their nativity on Thursday 12th December at 2.15 and Friday 13th December at 9.15. You should have received all the information on how to get tickets. If you have any questions about tickets then please speak to the office staff.
The children are progressing well in their Phonics groups and staff are continually assessing the children’s knowledge to make sure they are in the correct group. Continue to do the reading activities in your child’s reading diary. Soon we will be sending out log in details for those children on reading books to access additional activities online to support your child’s reading. As the texts become more difficult, your child will bring home a book bag book to read and they will be asked to go online to read the book that they have looked at that week in school as well as a quiz. The extra practice at home will help your child to develop confidence and fluency in their reading.
The children all had a lovely day at Ash End Children’s Farm. They enjoyed seeing lots of different animals and had a great time feeding the goats and sheep. The children were involved in a variety of different activities throughout the day but I’m sure they will all agree the highlight was our visit to see Father Christmas. The children were very well behaved and we had a lot of tired eyes on our Journey home. We hope your child was eager to tell you all about it!
Year 5 had an unforgettable Bushcraft trip, filled with adventure and teamwork! The children learned essential outdoor skills such as trap making, shelter building and basic first aid. They even participated in a mock plane wreckage recovery, adding to the excitement. They mastered fire lighting and enjoyed cooking some of their own meals. The evenings were spent camping with friends and indulging in the classic campfire treat—s’mores! It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to embrace the great outdoors.
This week we will be starting our topic all about Autumn. We will be talking about the things we already know about Autumn and will be learning lots of new information. We will also be going on an Autumn walk looking for signs of Autumn within the school grounds. As the weather has been so unsettled lately could you please ensure your child has wellies or a change of footwear and a waterproof coat with a hood. Throughout the week we will be talking about all of the changes we notice and will be involved in a wide range of activities that explore the season of Autumn. If out and about at the weekend or on your walk to school you see some interesting Autumn foliage such as leaves, conkers, acorns etc. then please collect it and send it in to school to help with our activities. Talk to your child about the changes to the weather and the environment to support the learning happening in school and to give them the opportunity to share what they have learned.
The children have all now settled in to their phonics sessions and are being introduced to a new sound every day. Your child will continue to bring home the new sounds learned on a Friday for you to practise with them. Please cut them out and fold the card so the sound is on one side and the picture on the other. Go through the sounds each day to get them into the habit of doing their reading activities. Once your child is confident with the new sounds as well as the previous sounds sent home, start to put the sounds together to make simple CV and CVC words such as ‘a-m and g-o-t’. The more confident your child is at blending these sounds then the easier they will find reading once ready for a reading book. Please find below some links to the sounds taught this week.
This week in Maths we will be looking at children recognising the amounts to 3 without the need to count (subitise). We want the children to move away from a reliance of counting and be able to see numbers and know how many their is in a set. This will help your child to develop a deeper understanding of number and will help them to move away from the reliance of using their fingers as they move through the school. We will be using the term “what can you see and how can you see it”. This will help your child to really look at the set and talk about what they can. To support at home, make a collection of different amounts to 3. Can your child say how many there are without the need to count? If you change the arrangement but still have the same amount do they still know how many there are? Do they know how many there are if you take one away?
The weather has been very unkind to us at the minute and we have had an incredible amount of rain. Please make sure your child comes to school suitably dressed for the rain. All children should come to school everyday with a waterproof coat with a hood. The temperature will continue to drop over the next few weeks so please make sure the coat is warm as the children spend a lot of time outside. We go outside in all weathers. If you are sending in hats and gloves then please name these and encourage your child to put their gloves in their coat pocket and their hat in the sleeve of their coat when they take it off so they can easily get to it when they need it. Thank you to all those parents who have sent in a pair of wellington boots for their chid. If you haven’t sent any in please try to do so in order for your child to change in to them in the wet weather and keep their feet dry.
Can we please ask if possible that children come into school in shoes they are able to fasten themselves. We have a number of children coming into school wearing shoes/ trainers that need to be tied with laces and they are unable to do them up. Children in Reception are expected to be able to put on and take off their own shoes to develop independence. They remove their shoes regularly for yoga sessions, for dressing up and to change into their wellington boots. We would be grateful for your help with this.

Hello and welcome to Receptions blog. We will try to update this block each week to let you know what the children will be focusing on in the coming week and activities that they will be doing and ways in which you can support their learning at home. We will also pass on messages and let you know what is happening in the week ahead. Please try and check in each week so that you can gain an understanding of what your child is doing in school and the expectations.
This week we will be focusing on the story ‘A Monster Surprise’ with a focus on feelings and emotions. We will be talking about how the characters felt during the story and will be relating it to how they may sometimes feel when they are in school. We will be talking about our school value of kindness and how we should always be kind to each other. This is an important message that you could discuss with your child at home to encourage them to always be kind to others and if someone isn’t being kind to them to not hit out but to come and tell an adult and we will be able to help them. We will be doing lots of activities during the week linked to the story such as making our own monsters in different ways, retelling and sequencing the story, acting out the story and lots of crafts linked to monsters. We are looking forward to seeing lots of different monsters through the week.
The children have had a little introduction to our Read Write inc phonics programme last week. They have learned the silent signals which help the sessions work successfully and have looked through the picture sound cards in preparation for learning the sounds this week. The children will be introduced to the first few sounds this week. On Friday they will bring home the sounds that they have learned for you to practise with them. Please go through these with your child so that they are confident with the first few sounds ready to move on next week. Over the next few weeks the children will be introduced to the first set of sounds. They will then be assessed to see if they know the sounds and can hear the sounds in words e.g. when the adult says m-a-t they can respond with ‘mat’. Once confident with this we will be looking for the children to begin reading the sounds to make simple words. Once your child is able to blend the sounds they know, they will then start on a reading book. We ask that you try and get into the habit of doing reading work every night so that your child gets into the routine of it for when they get their reading book. We also ask that you sign your child’s reading diary every night when they have done reading work with a little message sharing how they got on.
In Maths this week we will be focusing on sorting and matching, play a range of different games to identify pairs. You could support this learning at home by playing games like snap or pairs with playing cards or you could get your child to help sort out all the socks from the washing into ones that match or some of the coins from your purse. They could even sort their toys into different groups. Any activity that encourages your child to sort will reinforce the learning in school.
We are required by the government to carry out a baseline assessment on your child when they start primary school. Mrs Towner and Mrs Gerrard will continue to carry out these assessments this week. They are nothing to worry about and just a few simple activities for your child to complete. Unfortunately we will not be able to pass on any scores to you as we do not get these, the results are collated centrally by the Government. Can we please remind parents to name all clothes. We have a lot of items already going missing as children are leaving them anywhere, including the canteen and they have no names on them so difficult to return to the right person. We ask the child to put their jumpers or cardigans in their drawers so that other children do not pick them up. Work with your child to recognise their own name so that they put their items in the correct drawer and take the right items. Please name everything including coats and shoes so we can return items to the right person.

This Tuesday will be our Early Years sports day. We will be starting around 9.00. Please drop your your child to their classroom and then take a seat alongside the track. Please do not call your child over to you or come over to them when they are sitting on their mats. For safeguarding reasons we need to have all children with staff at all times. The children will be partaking in a series of races that focuses on participation rather than winning the race. We are looking forward to a lovely morning and hope the weather is kind to us.
We have finished our Read Write Inc programme now for the summer. Staff have collected all reading books in to get them organised for next year. If you still have books at home then please send them in to us. Remember to continue to go o to Oxford owl to read the book that has been set this week and click Fred frog to access previous books set for extra practise. By continuing to practise letter sounds over the summer break and read regularly your child in unlikely to loose any of their learning and will be ready for their new group after the break.
Next week we will be winding down for the summer break. We will be talking about the summer and going to the seaside. The children will learn a little about the seaside and its history and will have the opportunity to join n with a range of summer themed activities. We have had a wonderful year with your children and will be sad to see them go. We hope you all have a happy and safe summer.
This week we will be having a Science week and learning all about plants. We will learn about deciduous and evergreen trees, the parts of a tree and a flowering plant and what jobs those different parts do. We will be going on a walk around the school to identify the different trees looking closely at their leaves.
In Maths, we will be learning about time , before and after, days of the week, months of the year and hours, minutes and seconds.
In Phonics and English, we will be continuing to learn our sounds, improve our grammar, punctuation and reading and writing skills. Please continue to do the online work and practise the reading book sent home.

Today we dressed up in 1940s or WW2 attire. We had great fun creating artwork which was influenced by the past (the Coventry Blitz) and the work of Sandra Lawrence. As well as this created poetry inspired by the Blitz and imaged what life would have been like for an evacuated child.
Year 5 learnt about the key events in the Coventry Blitz on November 14th 1940. They experienced the Blitz at the Transport Museum, visited the Herbert Art Gallery to sit in an Anderson Shelter and reflected on the impact of the Blitz in the old Coventry Cathedral. The children explored the wealth of history in our local town centre and how events from the past will have impacted on the city and its people.
